Few things impact a person as much as their career path. A career will define his income, his security, his happiness and sometimes even his health. As such it's essential that anyone on a quest for self-improvement take the time to reflect on their career and identify areas that exhilarate them or make them unhappy. Particularly the latter.
Take the time to look within yourself and ask these questions:
This is a fundamental question because your career goals go hand in hand with the answer. Some people are highly motivated by money and career advancement while others would rather earn just enough to pay for living expenses so they can focus the rest of their lives on family and relaxation.
Neither path is wrong, of course, but if money is an issue for you then you must further assess whether your present career is able to offer you the raise you seek, or whether you may need to switch careers to earn a more significant income.
While passion is not required for a job, you should at least enjoy what you are doing. If you don't, try to determine how you can remedy the situation. Can you apply for a different position within the same company to give you a fresh outlook?
If you are locked into what you are currently doing within your career, you need to decide if working the daily grind is preferable to the uncertainty of setting out on a new career.
If a different career path does not leap to mind instantly then chances are you not so burned out by your current one that a career change is necessary. Career goals such as pursuing a promotion within the same company or transferring to a different company within the same industry should be enough to solve any unhappiness.
Job satisfaction counts for a great deal. Millions of people around the world would prefer to keep a lesser paying job that they love rather than move to a higher paying job that they despise. When defining your career goals always balance your financial goals against your personal goals.
The most important thing to keep in mind when setting your career goals is: be honest with yourself! All too often we are pushed into a career we dislike by overenthusiastic parents or the opinions of others close to us. Other times we weren't certain what career path we wanted to follow, so we majored in the wrong subject.
If you feel locked into your career due to peer pressure, previous college education or simply experience, it's important to realize that now more than ever adults of all ages are returning to college either full-time or during evening classes so that they can earn degrees that will help them pursue a new path. More and more colleges are offering fully credited educations over the Internet so that busy adults can work their educational pursuits around their other obligations.
The bottom line is if you are truly unhappy with your current career, it's never too late to set some new career goals.
