In the Importance of Setting Goals, we briefly mentioned that self-confidence is one of the benefits derived from setting achievable goals. Self-confidence breeds motivation, and motivation is the key ingredient for increased productivity and goal achievement.
Ask yourself, which of the two attitudes displayed below will ultimately help overcome the obstacle?
Or how about these attitudes?
These examples can be presented for just about any scenario or situation, but you'll notice the main difference between the two in each of the examples above comes down to self-confidence. If you are confident in your abilities, you will face adversity with a positive attitude and search for ways to overcome your obstacles despite their seemingly insurmountable nature.
The reality is few challenges that life tosses at us are unable to be beaten. We may lose a few battles here or there, and even major ones, but if we have the motivation to see things through to the end you'll almost always win the war.
Goals need not be large or extravagant; a goal can be as simple as putting an additional dollar per week in your savings account or eating ice cream three times a week rather than six. Although such small goals may seem trivial on the surface, they are generally small steps that are part of a larger plan, and when combined together the major plan comes to fruition.
But most important of all, when you succeed with the smaller goals your confidence is built up. You see the pieces begin to fall into place for your ultimate goals. This confidence feeds your motivation, which in turns prepares, and even excites you, to tackle the more challenging goals.
So remember: achieving small goals helps increase your self-confidence, which in turn increases your motivation, which in turn helps you tackle life's larger issues.
