Five Powerful Motivational Techniques

Motivation is the fuel that powers our journey towards goal achievement, so it's not a big surprise that people everyday are seeking out motivational techniques that will assist them in reaching their final destinations. Although there are a wide variety of "triggers" that can help motivate an individual, this article will examine a couple of the more common and universal motivational techniques you can incorporate into your personal plan.

Motivational Technique #1 – Visualization

Take some time early each day to visualize exactly what it is you are trying to achieve. If your goal is weight loss, mentally picture how you would look or live after reaching your goal. If your goal is additional income, visualize how it would feel to have an extra $500.00 (or whatever your actual goal is) in your pocket every month.

Too often we focus on the here and now so intensely that we forget the goal we're working towards. While it's good to remain disciplined and watchful during each stage of your progression, never become so focused on the journey that you lose sight of what success will bring.

Motivational Technique #2 – Milestones

Be sure to divide your goals into mini-goals that can be achieved either on a daily or weekly (at the most) basis. These mini-goals do not have to be detailed or complicated; they can be as simple as depositing an extra dollar into your savings account every day.

By setting a series of milestones you are priming yourself for a constant state of success. Each time you succeed in meeting one of these simple goals, you will feel good about your accomplishment, plus you will see that you are making steady progress towards your end goal.

Motivational Technique #3 – Mindset

A positive mindset is an essential part of any self-improvement quest. Without confidence in your abilities and/or the validity of your goal, your chances of remaining motivated and disciplined until the end are drastically reduced. No matter how seemingly insurmountable your goal, and no matter how ugly a turn life has taken, you need to train yourself to look at your glass as half full rather than half empty. Every day you live and breathe is another chance to improve your situation – you can't lose until you draw your last breath.

Motivational Technique #4 – Support

Often the difference between success and failure can be credited to an outside party's support. All of our goals and journeys will occasionally hit rocky patches of road, and while these patches are generally temporary in nature at the time they can be enough to frustrate us enough to quit. Having that friend, spouse or family member nearby to support you through rougher times and motivate you to stay the course can be invaluable.

Motivational Technique #5 – Competition

Most of us are imbedded with a competitive spirit – whether it be card games, sports or even business conquests, we like to pit our skills against friendly rivals and see who comes out on top. This is a great source of motivation!

If you can frame your goals in such a manner that you are competing either against a friend (perhaps you both are trying to lose weight?) or even against yourself (set up obstacles or milestones for you to surpass, or try to beat your past records), you will have a leg up on achieving your goal. Don't make your competitions "do or die" though; you want to emphasize the competition itself rather than a particular winner or loser. In a healthy competition, no one truly loses – they just start another game!

These five motivational techniques should help keep you on the right path through your self-improvement journey, but naturally there are other techniques you can incorporate to keep yourself highly motivated. Some are personal in nature; others are fairly common among humanity. Check out the Steps to Stay Motivated page of our free web guide if you would like to review more motivational techniques.
